Shiba Inu (SHIB) Takes a Serious Hit: Is the Worst Yet to Come?

Following a recent market reorganization, Shiba Inu (SHIB) has dropped to the position of the 34th-largest cryptocurrency. Although the token often dubbed the Dogecoin killer managed an 8% price gain over the past week, this upward movement lagged behind numerous other altcoins, causing it to forfeit its long-held second-place standing in the meme coin market. Additionally, various indicators point to a potential resurgence of bearish control for Shiba Inu.

For years, the crypto market recognized Dogecoin (DOGE) as the leading meme coin by market capitalization, with SHIB serving as its primary competitor. This dynamic persisted until the summer of 2025, when a new rival entered the scene and altered the landscape. That token, MemeCore (M), recently achieved a market cap approaching $3.5 billion following a monthly price surge of approximately 35%. In contrast, Shiba Inu managed only a 3% increase over the identical timeframe, bringing its market cap to roughly $3.37 billion. This places SHIB as the third-largest meme coin and the 34th-largest cryptocurrency overall.

Historically, SHIB held a much stronger position, with its market capitalization surging past $20 billion in 2024 and temporarily exceeding $40 billion back in 2021.

At present, a substantial gap of around $1.3 billion separates Shiba Inu from the fourth-largest meme coin, PUMP. Nevertheless, several concerning signals indicate that SHIB could experience further declines. The first warning sign is the declining activity on Shibarium. Last week, the Shiba Inu team rolled out an update for their layer-2 scaling network by refreshing its RPC listing within the Ethereum-lists/chains registry, giving Chainlist updated connection parameters. Despite this, the network continues to process a very low volume of daily transactions.

Another contributing factor is the growing volume of SHIB tokens being deposited onto centralized cryptocurrency exchanges, a trend highlighted by data from CryptoQuant.
